Director of the Year Awards UK Final 2011 Award Ceremony

       

Friday 23 September 2011 saw finalists from all over the country come together at the Lancaster London Hotel in the West End of London for an afternoon of celebration with award host Michael Portillo.

       

2011 Winners

       

Craig Errington C Dir FIoD, Wesleyan Assurance Society (West Midlands) Winner of Overall Director of the Year Having joined the mutual life assurer, Wesleyan Assurance Society, in 1991 as a Financial Adviser, Craig Errington progressed rapidly through the company with eight successive promotions and a number of awards achieved in every role carried out. Errington has been Chief Executive since 2005. Since taking on the role, new business sales have increased by 238 per cent over a five year period and employee engagement has increased from 54 per cent in 2005 to 82 per cent in 2010. Runner Up:

  • Richard Rolfe, Headteacher of Le Rocquier School (Jersey)

Andrew Scaife, Managing Director, Quantum Pharmaceutical (North East) Winner of Director of the Year (Small and Medium Company) A specialist pharmaceutical manufacturer and supplier of bespoke medicines, Quantum Pharmaceutical despatches over 1,500 products from the site on a daily basis to a customer base of over 10,000 pharmacies, hospitals and wholesalers. Within the last two years the company has doubled its profitability and was subsequently ranked number 14 on The Sunday Times 2011 Buyout Track 100 league table which ranks Britain's 100 mid-market private equity-backed companies with the fastest growing profits. In their two years under Andrew Scaife's leadership, the company has rapidly grown and the workforce has doubled in size. Highly Commended:

Meredydd Hughes QPM C Dir Winner of Chartered Director of the Year Meredydd Hughes has been Chief Constable of South Yorkshire Police since 2004. In his role he is responsible for delivering an effective policing service in South Yorkshire, serving a population of 1.3 million people with over 5,500 officers and staff. In 2006, he was awarded the Queen's Police Medal in the New Year Honours. He also sits as Chairman on a number of company boards including a private company called Road Safety Support Ltd and NDORS Limited, a private company providing services to the criminal justice system. Mark Prentice, Managing Director, Firmus Energy (Ireland) Winner of Young Director of the Year firmus energy is a natural gas and electricity supplier based in Northern Ireland. Under the leadership of Mark Prentice, the company is also responsible for the development and operation of a new natural gas network in 10 towns and cities across Northern Ireland. Originally recruited as Commercial Manager in July 2005, Prentice was appointed Managing Director a year later. Under his leadership, the company has increased its workforce from six to over 80 employees and was ranked in the top 20 Best Small Workplaces in the UK in 2010 and 2011. Highly Commended:

Richard Rolfe, Headteacher, Le Rocquier School (Jersey) Winner of Public/Third Director of the Year When Richard Rolfe was appointed as head teacher to Le Rocquier School he was the fourth head teacher in four years. The school was under-subscribed, had falling student numbers and had lost the confidence of the community. Within a short space of time Rolfe transformed the school's performance and finances, eradicating years of deficit. The school is now over subscribed and in 2010, they recorded their best ever GCSE results. Highly Commended:

Rt Hon Brian Wilson, Chairman of Harris Tweed Hebrides LLP (Scotland) Winner of Global Director of the Year Formed in 2007, Harris Tweed Hebrides now accounts for around 90 per cent of Harris Tweed production. As Chairman, Brian Wilson led the regeneration of a product that was threatened with extinction into an upmarket fabric which is now a key product in the fashion and design sector. A former Member of Parliament, Wilson is also the Energy Policy Adviser to Lews Castle College and is a Director of Celtic Football Club. Highly Commended:

Dr Kevin Hard, CEO, EvoEnergy Ltd (East Midlands) Winner of Director of the Year for Environmental Leadership From a standing start with £30,000 in 2007, Dr Kevin Hard, who has a PhD from the Institute of Sustainable Energy Technologies (ISET), University of Nottingham, created a business that now employs 203 people and is doubling the organisation's turnover every six months to a current monthly turnover of £3-5 million. EvoEnergy is now one of the largest solar photovoltaic (PV) companies in the UK, designing, financing, installing and monitoring Solar PV systems for both domestic and commercial projects. Clients include McDonalds, Sharp and the Energy Saving Trust. Highly Commended:

Thomas George Eakin, Chairman of Eakin Group of Companies (Northern Ireland) Winner of Family Business Director of the Year Tom Eakin has developed the Eakin Group of Companies from a manufacturing start-up in 1974 to a four company organisation employing more than 200 people that manufacture and sell disposable medical appliances. The group now turns over more than £40 million per annum and since 2008 the groups profits have increased by 60 per cent. Tom Eakin, Chairman of Eakin Holdings Ltd, has made his sons, Paul and Jeremy, responsible for the group management. Highly Commended:
