Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) figures 13 January 2012

Head of Education and Skills Policy, Mike Harris said:

"The increasing proportion of students being awarded top degrees can make it more difficult for employers to distinguish between the outstanding and the good. However, it is important to remember that while a degree classification can be a starting line for recruitment, it's rarely the finishing post. A degree is an indicator of calibre, not the final word - factors such as work experience and wider employability skills are often far more important to employers."

"Overall, IoD members are generally upbeat about quality of graduates they recruit. That said, some do perceive a slight deterioration in quality over time. The continued growth in the numbers being awarded firsts and 2:1s will inevitably fuel debate about the maintenance of standards. But this is a complex issue and we shouldn't rush to judgement."
