Our speaker for this month’s breakfast is Bob Betts Managing Director of Smith of Derby, one of the UK’s leading clock repairers, restorers and conservation specialists.
For over 150 years, Smith of Derby have been creating and caring for the world’s greatest public clocks; from small parish church tower clocks to some of the most celebrated cathedral, commercial and private clocks. The family owned clockmaking company, boasts an enviable list of timepieces in famous locations, including the Grand Mosque at Mecca, St Paul’s Cathedral, St Pancras Station tower clock in London and the Custom House on Shanghai’s waterfront Bund, to name but a few.
Smith of Derby has always been an international company, initially it followed the railways throughout Britain’s expanding empire, installing clocks to help the trains run on time, and now international sales account for half of their annual turnover. With new projects such as the Harmony Clock Tower in Guangzhou, China, which has presented the company with one of its toughest engineering challenges yet, the company is continuing to expand and create even more striking designs.
Bob will share some fascinating insights in to this fascinating company—a presentation not to be missed!
