The IoD and you

What is the Institute of Directors?

The Institute of Directors (IoD) is the professional membership organisation for today's business leaders. We have been supporting and representing directors from across the complete spectrum of business for over 100 years. We aim to ensure that our members receive the best support, both now and in their future career. Membership is individual, allowing you to take advantage of a large portfolio of products and services. From representing members' views and keeping them informed of the latest business legislation, to providing them with exceptional professional development, membership is here to help meet your personal business challenges.

Is my membership tax deductible?

The annual membership fee covers one year from the first day of the month of election and is normally tax deductible. If you are entitled to the tax deduction, you will be able to find a section in your self-assessment form to claim it as a tax deductible expense.

Am I eligible for membership?

You will usually qualify for membership if you have responsibility for the strategic direction of your organisation; you do not always have to be a board director to apply and you need not be a registered director. From entrepreneurs of start-up companies, to CEOs of large organisations, both private and public sector, we provide business leaders with the effective tools to support them in their role.

Someone in my company is a member. Does that make me a member?

No, membership is individual and not corporate, so it would not make you or your company a member.

I am going to be based in Paris for six months. Can I still use the benefits?

Yes, and as a member you will automatically have access to our premises in Paris, based at the private members' club France-ameriques, located in the heart of the city. In addition our branch hosts a number of events to give you the opportunity to meet and network with fellow business leaders from all industry sectors.

Saving you both time and money

A few of my co-directors are planning on joining the IoD. are there any financial incentives for a group of directors joining?

Yes, we can offer a reduction when more than one individual from the same organisation applies at the same time for IoD membership. We recommend that you contact our Membership Development Department on +44 (0)20 7766 8888 to discuss your requirements.

Why should I join for more than one year?

If you choose to join for multiple years you will be eligible for a reduction on the election fee. You will also be safe in the knowledge that you will be receiving continuous support, with the benefit that your membership fee is fixed at this year's rate.

As a growing company I have to justify my costs. How can the IoD save me money?

Membership can deliver tangible savings for you and your business over the course of the year in a number of ways. For example, just by taking advantage of free private consultations with our business advisors* (which would normally cost you from £200 per hour), free access to our legal and tax help-lines**, or free usage of our stunning premises across the UK and on the Continent, savings could swiftly outweigh the annual cost of membership. The annual subscription is also tax deductible.

I am busy in my role, would I have time to utilise the benefits?

We appreciate that your time is precious and have specifically designed membership benefits with this in mind. For example, through the Business Information Service our expert researchers can provide information to you, wherever you are located, by e-mail, fax or telephone***. all of our benefits will naturally complement and support you in your day-to-day life as a director, allowing you time to focus on your role.

Meeting your individual needs

I am rarely in London, how would the premises benefit me?

Our exclusive premises are located across the UK. Members can utilise the free meeting rooms and private work areas at all of the premises, which include Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, London (116, 123 Pall Mall and the City of London), Manchester, Norwich, Nottingham and Reading. Members also have access to our premises in Paris, based at the private members' club France-ameriques, and in Brussels, at the centrally located 5 star Le Plaza Hotel. We are continually looking at expanding our network and keep members regularly updated with news of further additions.

I have been a director for a number of years. Would membership still be of benefit to me?

Membership is there to benefit you at whatever stage of your career you choose to join the IoD. We will keep you up-to-date on the latest business legislation and current business practices. Membership can support you in your day-to-day business activities, saving you both time and money, and providing concise answers to your legal and tax questions, through our help-lines**.

As a member can I bring non-members to the IoD?

Yes, you may bring up to three guests with you to use our free meeting space at any one time. Rooms can also be hired for meetings with potential and existing clients, or for interviews or presentations. Non-members are also welcome to join members at events held by our branches, or to dine with you in our stunning restaurants.

I travel a lot on business, so I am rarely in one place for long at a time. How could membership support this lifestyle?

Many of the IoD benefits can be accessible remotely from wherever you are in the world. For example, if you are in need of last-minute business information, you can access the information by telephoning or e-mailing our Information Centre***.

In the UK, as well as a large geographical spread of premises, we have an extensive network of over 30 branches, providing you with local opportunities to network. We also offer a variety of specially negotiated products and services including: IoD Hotel accommodation (discounted rates through the Intercontinental Hotels Group); free Hertz #1 Gold Club membership and free access to 16 airport executive lounges, for both business and leisure flights.
